Eichler country: flat roofs, post-and-beam ceilings, and galley kitchens where modern appliances become a fit puzzle

Eichler galleys in Birdland, postwar ranches in Cherry Chase, and new townhomes near the Heritage District — we install the appliance and modify the cabinet when the opening won't cooperate.

Aligning a custom wood overlay panel on a panel-ready built-in refrigerator — on a job in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara

Few towns on the Peninsula throw as many different kitchens at you as Sunnyvale. Whole tracts of Eichler homes sit a few blocks from 1950s ranches and newer infill townhomes, and the Eichlers in particular have narrow post-and-beam galleys that fight modern appliance dimensions. We install everything from dishwashers to panel-ready built-ins, and because we also do the cabinet carpentry, a too-tight Eichler run or a non-standard ranch opening gets handled on the same visit.

Local context

Kitchens in Sunnyvale aren't one-size-fits-all

Sunnyvale's Eichler tracts — concentrated around Birdland, Greenwood Manor, and pockets near Ortega Park — are the kitchens that surprise people most. Flat roofs and post-and-beam framing mean there's no attic to route a vent through, exterior beams limit where you can cut, and the original galleys were laid out for slim mid-century appliances. Sliding a 36-inch refrigerator or a modern range into one of those narrow runs almost always means reworking the cabinets that frame it. We know how these homes are put together, so we plan the cabinet modification around the structure instead of fighting it.

Step outside the Eichler neighborhoods and Sunnyvale turns into solid 1950s ranch territory — Cherry Chase, Washington Park, and the established blocks near the Heritage District. The cabinetry here is generally square and well-built, but it was sized for a single wall oven, a 30-inch range, and a dishwasher that no longer exists. Wall-oven swaps to taller modern cutouts, microwave-drawer additions, and dishwasher upgrades routinely call for a reinforced cavity or a trimmed stile. When the appliance shows up but the installer can't touch the wood, a one-afternoon job stretches into weeks of waiting.

The newer side of Sunnyvale — townhome and condo development around Ponderosa, downtown, and the corridors near the rail line — brings a different demand. These kitchens are often built for counter-depth and panel-ready appliances from the start, so most of the effort goes into fit and alignment: getting overlay panels to sit flat, lining up the gaps so a paneled dishwasher or integrated refrigerator matches the run beside it. Tight townhome footprints leave little room for error, which is exactly where checking the spec sheet before purchase earns its keep.

Built for Eichler galleys

Post-and-beam runs in Birdland and around Ortega Park give you no attic and almost no slack between the exposed beam and the upper cabinets. We read the framing first, then plan the duct path and cabinet cuts so a modern hood and range actually fit.

Ranch cavities that hold modern weight

A 1950s wall-oven cabinet in Cherry Chase or Washington Park was framed for a light single oven. Today's units run deeper and heavier, so we add the bracing and re-cut the opening before the new oven ever goes in.

One trip, both trades

Most Sunnyvale homeowners are surprised they don't have to schedule an installer and a carpenter separately. For us the cutting, the install, and the trim-out are all the same job, handled the day we show up.

Fit situations we see here

01

Eichler galley hood and duct

In a Birdland Eichler, a low post-and-beam ceiling and an exposed beam sit right where the new range hood wants to vent. With no attic above, we map a duct run that threads past the beam and out a feasible exterior wall, then adjust the surrounding cabinets so the hood mounts at the right height over the range.

02

Cherry Chase wall-oven re-support

A Cherry Chase ranch is swapping a dated oven for a heavier modern wall unit. The original cabinet cavity can't carry the load, so we open it up, add framing and a stronger shelf, and resize the cutout so the new oven sits level and locked in for the long haul.

03

Birdland cooktop widening

A Birdland kitchen moves from a narrow cooktop to a wider one, and the existing counter cutout and base cabinet won't take it. We enlarge the cutout, rework the cabinet face and drawers below, and refit the run so the bigger cooktop drops in without crowding the surrounding doors.

Sunnyvale kitchens punish a guessed measurement, whether it's a post-and-beam Eichler galley or a counter-depth townhome run with no margin. Already settled on an appliance? Before it ships, request a fit check and we'll measure the opening, spell out what the cabinet needs, and book the install and carpentry as one visit.

How we work in Sunnyvale

One visit: install and the carpentry to fit it

  1. 01

    Assess & measure

We start with the appliance spec sheet and the opening it has to live in — width, depth, height, the face frame, utilities, and the cabinet around it. Most fit problems are decided here, before a single tool comes out.

  2. 02

    Protect the kitchen

Floors, countertops, and finished cabinet faces get covered, padded, and taped off first. Blue tape on the edges, moving blankets and ram board on the floor, and a vacuum staged for dust control.

  3. 03

    Install & fit the cabinet

We set the appliance — and when it does not drop in clean, we modify the cabinet to make it: resizing the opening, building a support platform, adding filler strips, or aligning panels and trim for an even reveal.

  4. 04

    Level, test & clean

The appliance is leveled, secured, and anti-tip hardware set where it belongs. We test operation, check every reveal and gap, then vacuum and wipe down so the kitchen is ready to use.

FAQ

Sunnyvale: common questions

My Eichler galley has no attic — can a range hood even vent in there?

Usually, yes, but it takes planning. A flat-roof Eichler gives you no overhead chase, so the duct has to run horizontally past the exposed beam and out the nearest workable exterior wall. We trace that path first, confirm it clears the framing, then set the hood at the right height over the range and rework the upper cabinet around it. If a full duct isn't feasible, we'll tell you straight and talk through recirculating options.

Will a 36-inch refrigerator fit in a narrow Eichler galley run?

Sometimes it drops right in; more often the slim mid-century cabinets beside it have to give up an inch or two. Eichler galleys were laid out for narrower boxes, so we measure the run against the unit's real door-swing and depth, then trim or rebuild the flanking cabinets so the doors clear and the fridge sits proud of the counter the way it's supposed to.

The post-and-beam ceiling is right above my upper cabinets — does that limit what you can do?

It shapes the plan more than it limits it. With the beam exposed and load-bearing, there's no cutting into it and very little headroom above the uppers, so we work within that envelope: shorter hood housings, ducting that hugs the beam line, and cabinet cuts kept below the structure. We read how your particular Eichler is framed before any wood comes out.

Can you reinforce a flimsy 1950s ranch oven cabinet for a heavier modern unit?

That's a routine fix. Ranch cabinets in Cherry Chase and Washington Park were framed for light mid-century ovens, so we open the cavity, add bracing and a stronger shelf, and resize the cutout. The new oven ends up level, fully supported, and locked in — done in the same appointment as the install.
